LISZEN: Library Blog Search Engine

Wanting to find out what other librarians are saying about Library 2.0?  Or perhaps you can’t remember who talked about “Fighting the Stereotypes!” a few weeks ago.  Welcome to the search engine for librarians!

I’ve been slaving away, taking links from LISWIKI and importing them to Google Co-op.  The result is a custom search engine that sifts through 530 individual blogs. Excited yet? If not, here are just a few of the top library blogs that are included in every search:

So, what is everyone still reading this post for? Check out a new way to search for library information at LISZEN.com.

Also, I still have a few more surprises up my sleeve… so stay tuned.

  • Very cool!!!!! I haven’t had time to play around with it much, but I definitely plan to. I’m looking forward to the surprises.

  • Now, if http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ had a plugin, we could add LISZen to our Firefox search pull-down menu… Meanwhile, I’ll echo Jennifer’s comment.

  • Thanks for the comments. I think my eyes are still bugging out from the many hours gone into this project, but it was worth it. I’ve already had a few additional submissions today, and I will continue to make this thing grow as longs as there are library bloggers around to power it. If your site is not in “the list”, email me, contact me, or post your submission in the comments. Anything goes; don’t let your blog go unheard!

  • Wow, nice job! It doesn’t work for me in Firefox 1.5 for some reason, but in other browsers looks great. And it’s fine in Firefox 2.0.

Walt, if nobody else does it first I’ll put one of those plugins together on Monday.

  • I am running Firefox 1.5.0.7 and it is working fine. What is the full version of Firefox 1.5.x.x you are running? I would like to take care of any bugs. I’m, also, very interested in seeing your plug-in.

  • Doesn’t work for me, too, with FF 1.5.0.7. When I hit the search button the screen flickers one time and nothing happens.

  • Okay. I’m looking into this. I haven’t been able to replicate the problem on three separate computers all running 1.5.0.7. I’ll try to get a fix soon. Until then, now would be a great time to try Firefox 2.0 :-)

  • There are some plugins that do not work with 2.0, but as soon as they do, I will change. I’m eager to try Zotero, for example, too, that is only working with 2.X.

  • Walt wants a Firefox plugin – I’d like one too, but don’t have the time right now to make one. But IE7 users can easily build one. Use the form on the page “Find more Providers”. It works a treat.

Here is the xml Garrett, if you want to provide a search provider for L&IS search engine. It’s easy to do.

    LISzen
    LISzen provider
    UTF-8

    It works really well.

  • I won’t have time to work on it until later in the week, but I planning on releasing a Firefox plugin if nobody beats me to it.

  • OpenSearch Plugin that’ll work until the DNS gets resolved…Then I’ll have to update it. As I said in your latest post – the results don’t seem to embed under the Buddha Reader – but maybe I’m missing something in the code…

  • Works great. The library at ITESM university in Monterrey, Mexico has a blog that you could add: http://biblioteca.itesm.mx/blog/

  • Ivan your site has been added.

  • Thanks a lot for this work Mr Hungerford !
It will be very efficient for my own job. I like very much the liszen’s design !

Just to say something, the right url for La Conjuration is La conjuration.net/notes but it’s not a problem for research ;)

Merci beaucoup et à bientôt !

  • Glad you like the site everyone. I’m enjoying all the great input on the project.
